a whirlwind

I haven’t been feeling well the last couple of days, so this morning I called in sick, dropped Zoë off at preschool, drove back home to a very quiet house, and climbed in bed. Two hours later I awoke with … Continue reading →

reporting from AWP

If you have never been to AWP, you should go at least once. The panels and readings are wonderful, of course, but also, there is just nothing like being surrounded by thousands of writers all at once. It’s overwhelming, but … Continue reading →

why write?

AWP was amazing and exhausting. When D and the girls picked me up at the airport Saturday night, I squeezed myself in back between Stella and Zoë, and I gave Stella a huge hug, kissing her repeatedly. She went on … Continue reading →

reporting from awp

I slept for six and a half hours straight last night! Heavenly. I wish I could have slept even more, but I had to get up and pump. I’ve been pumping and pumping and pumping, which, I’ll admit, has surprised … Continue reading →

Hey, we’re reporting from AWP (and by “we” I mean me and the Medela Pump n’ Style–more about that later). I’ll give you an update on the panel later, as well. It was so fun! But I wanted to let … Continue reading →

Welcome!

I'm a mama and writer and teacher. I've been helping mothers tell the stories they need to tell since 2006. I'm the author of Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers (April 2012, Viva Editions) and Ready for Air, a memoir about the premature birth of my daughter, which will be published by University of Minnesota Press, fall 2013. I teach "Motherhood & Words" online and at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. I'm interested in writing and teaching and motherhood and where these things intersect. On this blog I review motherhood literature, interview authors, check in about my own writing and teaching, and sometimes post about my daughters. Join the discussion!
