hunkering down

Friday’s tragedy in Newtown continues to reverberate through our lives, our families, our communities. From my tiny office I stare out the window at the gray skies and the dirty snow, and feel the weight of that tremendous loss, of … Continue reading →

daughters, a dog and a book

I’ve been quiet here lately, and I’m sorry about that. Life is extremely full right now. (And for some reason—barometric pressure?—I’ve been so exhausted that I haven’t been able to get myself out of bed when my alarm goes off … Continue reading →

Benjamin

I feel lost these days, bumbling around, going through the motions of life. I go into the office and I get my work done, but I’m not really there.  I have a pulsing headache that begins somewhere in my shoulder … Continue reading →

a few things I’m grateful for

One of the things I’d like to do here are Motherhood & Words is to write a weekly or bi-weekly post about things for which I’m grateful. Stress tends to get the better of me, and I forget to appreciate … Continue reading →

A recap of that thing called life (and some birthday wishes for my daughter)

I obviously haven’t posted in a while, and I apologize, but I’ve barely been keeping my head above water. I’ve been involved in a job search, a final edit of Use Your Words before it moves to copyediting, prepping for … Continue reading →

happy mother’s day!

Stella came into our room this morning and said, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mama.” “Thanks, sweetie,” I said and looked at the clock. It was 5:30 a.m. “I’ll just snuggle with you for a while,” she said, and she climbed into bed next … Continue reading →

what’s in a moment?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the moments that I don’t want to forget—moments with my children and other family members, especially my grandpa, who defies the odds at 102, but who won’t be able to forever. (He would give … Continue reading →

3!

It’s hard to believe that on Saturday my little Zoë turned three. For weeks, whenever someone asked her how old she was, she smiled that huge Zoë smile and held up three fingers. And now it’s official—my baby is not a … Continue reading →

the gerbil diaries, part I

Perhaps for some of you the word “gerbil” brings to mind a somewhat hazy (and disturbing) rumor involving Richard Gere, an emergency room, and an unfortunate rodent. Even I experienced a vague sense of discomfort when, last week, the word … Continue reading →

Welcome!

I'm a mama and writer and teacher. I've been helping mothers tell the stories they need to tell since 2006. I'm the author of Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers (April 2012, Viva Editions) and Ready for Air, a memoir about the premature birth of my daughter, which will be published by University of Minnesota Press, fall 2013. I teach "Motherhood & Words" online and at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. I'm interested in writing and teaching and motherhood and where these things intersect. On this blog I review motherhood literature, interview authors, check in about my own writing and teaching, and sometimes post about my daughters. Join the discussion!
