time

The summer heat that browned the edges of our Hostas and killed our grass has suddenly disappeared, and the air is fresh, crisp, for the first time in months. It smells like new beginnings outside, which seems fitting because today … Continue reading →

teacher pride

I love teaching. I know I’ve written that very sentence here before, and I know I’ll write it again. Putting it down here reminds me that the classroom is my passion, that my students have changed my life, that their … Continue reading →

Mother Writers and the Hostile Reader

It’s been a long time since I’ve been in a class/workshop situation not heavily populated by mothers. Most of my classes, if not entirely made up of mother writers, are at least populated by a significant numbers of mothers. And … Continue reading →

Benjamin

I feel lost these days, bumbling around, going through the motions of life. I go into the office and I get my work done, but I’m not really there.  I have a pulsing headache that begins somewhere in my shoulder … Continue reading →

on being a writer

I haven’t had much time to sit down and really write these last weeks. Between my grandpa dying, a trip up north, a non-writing related freelance project, and limited childcare, I just haven’t had the time to spirit myself off … Continue reading →

kudos and upcoming classes

I finally feel like I can breathe again since finishing my manuscript. I hadn’t realized how much energy that last push had taken. In the last two weeks I knew I needed to turn my attention back to the work … Continue reading →

what’s in a moment?

I’ve been thinking a lot about the moments that I don’t want to forget—moments with my children and other family members, especially my grandpa, who defies the odds at 102, but who won’t be able to forever. (He would give … Continue reading →

I am currently teaching three classes–two online Mother Words classes and a prose revision class at the Loft–and I’m busy, especially when you add the girls and Stella’s spring break last week and writing and editing and family and friends … Continue reading →

Welcome!

I'm a mama and writer and teacher. I've been helping mothers tell the stories they need to tell since 2006. I'm the author of Use Your Words: A Writing Guide for Mothers (April 2012, Viva Editions) and Ready for Air, a memoir about the premature birth of my daughter, which will be published by University of Minnesota Press, fall 2013. I teach "Motherhood & Words" online and at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis. I'm interested in writing and teaching and motherhood and where these things intersect. On this blog I review motherhood literature, interview authors, check in about my own writing and teaching, and sometimes post about my daughters. Join the discussion!
